Good morning! Today is “research and writing” day in the studio. The topic is consciousness, of the conscious self and of all other things living. That’s broad! But when examined nothing lives without consciously applying its will to thrive and become. I am exploring this. It is impossible to pinpoint when consciousness began. When did life begin is something humankind has pondered forever! We are compelled to understand our world. It is truly a fascinating place, a marvelous mystery!
I am researching consciousness so that it can be expressed in the form of artwork. How can I paint what I feel is true of consciousness? This leads to knowing about what kind of consciousness plants and animals have. And what of the microscopic world?
Does our mind and body work due to having consciousness? I am thinking back to the embryo stage and further when the embryo was a zygote. Cells divided and became. Those cells had conscious behaviors to become a human being. Their growth stimulated to become. A will to become.
Plants do not have a brains and hearts, the nervous system as we do, yet something drives them to live to respond, to become. Microbial life has its own way of being conscious to become what it is.
Consciousness is the connection we have with other living things. It is energy.
I cannot help but think of the information that is gleaned from the bible. Each book a history of its time. The thoughts and beliefs stand as being important and applicable of our own time. The written words about things which define the world and its consciousness.
Joseph Cambell, a great theologian in his time, who understood human mythology, told of stories which explain God and conscious living. One story he told about himself was that he had gone to all the greatest religious leaders and asked one question. I have forgotten the exact phrasing of his question, but the follow sentence is close.: “Is god within us? The answer they all gave him was, “Yes God is within us and we are within God.” For me the thought of God as being “The great consciousness” rings true. Especially when you think of the first books in the Bible about creation.
Consciousness needed bodies to become physical beings to reproduce. Then my thought is consciousness is a spirit being. That is how we are within God and God is within us. The next thoughts are that consciousness is the galaxy beyond us, our earth is a living planet that gives life to us, birth if you will. It’s one of many planets, there must be others who also have consciousness, and life. Then is the universe the fabric in which all life can build and become. I think so!
Now, how to use depict my thoughts. One way is through symbolism. I find there is so much more to being conscience.
