Have a seat! Come on in!
Are you a reader? I am! I love books, and so there I am, either reading one or listening to one. The power of the written word! I reread the favorites after allowing time to pass. Certain books never get old. Some books I have not read in years, or never, yet they are known as classic stories. It’s time to read them and so I wonder what I will glean from them. What will they give up. Dare I take on Ivanhoe or Moby Dick? It is the first 50 pages of Ivanhoe are well, it does prepare you for the story. And unless you like to know history, it might feel over much. And when it comes to Moby Dick, that’s simply difficult until you get into the swing of things. Both are fat juicy books. LOL there is always Ulysses! I recall reading it about 12 or 13. Now I wonder what I took away from it. Something impressed me enough to keep the books as my own. Now I like being reminded via a synapsis what it is about that I might find those particular things.
I wonder how much of a chance the older books get with today’s readers. The language, the writing has changed. You simply need to absorb it for what it is. And love it for what it is.
I wonder how many people have read May Sarton’s Kinds of Love or the many other books written by her which tell of her world. How many identify with her and other older writers? How about the poets?
There is a difference in the writing of many of today’s books, and the movies you find on t.v. ; it seems few have “meat to them”. I watched The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo last night and it was good. The books I deem better.
I for one wish to explore the old books, and find the best among them. Best wishes! P.J.
